Actspectation Victorious in the Mother of all Races by James J Gordon
 | |
Actspectation escorted by adoring fans and handlers
|
By the time the feature race between the tri-island champions was about to get on the way-Actspectation from British Virgin Islands,Hezacateye from St. Thomas and Hearts At Risk from St.Croix, possibly the largest crowd of racing fans were assembled to see history in the making.
The biggest question on most fans mind, will
Actspectation rise to the occasion and avenge the loss to Hezacateye on Sunday, August 31.
The largest assemblage of BVI horse racing
fans at Clinton E.Phipps Racetrack were here
to show their unwavering support and to take
the winning Trophy back to Tortola.
The atmosphere was emotionally charged. Big bucks and a lot of emotions were riding on the outcome of this race.
Eventhough this was a nine race card which fans enjoyed, when Actspectation was seen leaving the assembling area in fron of the stands, you coul hear a deep sigh and hearts
pounding including my own. Then came the announcement that the horse was going to have a loose shoe refitted.
The fans waited with baited breath . Only when the announcement came that the horses were returning to begin the race did the butterflies left my stomach and i presume that was the case with most fans.
By the time the horses were safely into the starting gate, all fans present were on their feet. With the announcement that they are off, the mood was electric.
Off down the backstretch they went and by the time they passed the announcers booth,Hezacateye was in the lead, actspectation was close behind and Hearts At Risk was close behind. Around the bend and into the backstretch they went.
By this time fans were so agitated and sreaming for their favourite, the decibel level was unbelieveable.
Down the backstreach and around the final bend they came. Actspectation, true to form had closed the Gap and began to take the lead. Hearts At Risk, also a come from behind horse had closed the gap and going after Actspectation. But that is a chapter for later history. Actspectation not only redeemed himself against Hezacateye ,but did a clean sweep and took the Cup.
Celebration rocked the stands and fans took to the grounds waving the BVI flag and chanting. This was a site no racing fan would have liked to miss.(Perhaps some Hezacateye fans who lost big bucks and suffered seriously bruised egos.
The Pictorials which will be displayed will
give some idea of the nature of the occasion |
