New Beach in the Making. by James J Gordon
The BVI Review
For many of us who are old enough to remember the pleasures we enjoyed during our school long summer holidays when in mass we would go to the nearest beach to play, swim, wrestle, drink coconut water, make and race model boats - persons of all ages shared
stories ,jokes -all recreational and a joy
to remember.
Something terribly wrong happened during the early building boom. Many of these nearby beaches were damaged, some beyond recognition- Fat Hog's Bay,Thomas Land, Brandyvine Bay,Josia's Bay to name a few.
Some individuals, who claimed permission was granted by government, exercised wantoon disregard for the need to preserve these precious gifts of ours.
I remember a couple years ago getting a distressed call from Mr. Burt Lettsome, the Chief Conservation Officer, imploring me to use what influence I had with persons in authority at Public Works Department to stop the dumping of dirt along the edge of the sea at Brandyvine Bay, ostensibly to restore the road in the aftermath of a hurricane.
I was as inscensed as he was in that Brandyvine Bay represents the only beach area on the south shore of Tortola which could be restored and rendered usefull to all and sundry, given its ease of access.
It was late in the evening and the dumping of dirt was to take place next day.
I called a senior officer immediately and informed him of what I had been told.
I told him such a step was unacceptable. Hence he should use his good office to put an end to the imminent destruction of this valuable area.
I know how pleased the Chief Conservation officer must feel to see this project come to fruition.
The work has just begun with the restoration. The restored beach area, when completed, needs to be fenced and maintained for the enjoyment of an appreciative community. |

The restoration of Brandyvine Bay Beach is a very worthwhile project. Mr. Burt Lettsome, Chief Conservation Officer and the Government deserves praise for undertaking this project.
