Bar Adopts New Strategic Plan

     Virgin Islands Bar Assocaition Strategic Plan 2005-2008
     
     GOAL I
     To promote improvements in the administration of justice, and to monitor and advocate public policy issues affecting the judicial system.
     
     Strategies:
      *Pursue and support improvements in the United States Virgin Islands courts system, including advocating the application of technology to advance the administration and efficiency of the judicial system.
     
      *Develop and implement a fair and impartial annual judicial evaluation process for public dissemination
     
      *Develop and implement a fair and impartial process for evaluation of nominees for appointment or reappointment to the bench for public dissemination.
     
      *Develop and implement a fair and impartial process for annual evaluation of the federal and territorial court systems.
     
      *Identify and address proposed legialation affecting the administration of justice and the practice of law.
     
     
     GOAL II
     To ensure the hightest standards of professional competence and ethical conduct of the membership.
     
     Strategies:
      *Ensure the operation of the Ethics & Grievance Committee and the District Subcommittees to follow the Model Rules of Ethical Conduct with respect to processing attorney grievances.
     
      *Develop a system to administer mandatory continuing legal education requirements in accordance with the rules of Territorial Court.
     
      *Establish formal and informal programs designed to assist lawyers in addressing the stresses involved in the practice of law and quality of life issues.
     
     
     GOAL III
     To promote public service and provide public education of the law by members of the Bar, the Board approved the following strategies:
     
     Strategies:
      *Establish and maintain relationships with other organizations to jointly provide programs of service to the public.
     
      *Develop programs to encourage the public service activities of members of the Bar.
     
      *Educate the public about the law and the legal profession's role in our society.
     
      *Strengthen existing programs to provide law related education to Virgin Islands youth.

   The United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit has adopted new local rules that require the filing of briefs in both electronic and paper form.

   The Virgin Islands Bar Association will hold it's annual meeting on Friday, December 9, 2005. This year's annual meeting will be at Divi Carina Bay Resort and Casino on St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands.

Bar Adopts New Strategic Plan
   During the Presidency of Amos W. Carty, in 2004, the V.I. Bar Association developed a strategic plan, which was adopted by the Board of Governors. Amos Carty had this to say about the newly adopted strategic plan: "The newly adopted strategic plan will provide a guide for the activities of the Bar Association into the future. It is a plan that has been developed with input from our membership as well as other community members. I am excited that our newly adopted strategic plan is realistic and has attainable goals and benchmarks. It will allow us to finally devlop an association that is responsive to the needs of its members and the wider community that we serve."

2005 Almeric L. Christian Tennis Tournament
   The funds raised from the tournament provide financial assistance to deserving law students from the U. S. Virgin Islands. All the students who receive grants under the Almeric Christian Scholarship Fund are law students who sign a commitment to return to the Territory to practice law.
V.I. Attorney General Swan dies at age 62
   Government officials and the territory's legal community expressed shock and sadness at the sudden death of V.I. Attorney General Alva A. Swan early Wednesday, July 13, 2005 in St. Thomas.

Support for Magistrates Court Narrowly Defeats Supreme Court as Priority
   The Bar Herald's first on-line poll gave a narrow lead to the establishment of a Magistrates Court within the Territorial Court as a priority over a Virgin Islands Supreme Court. 44% of those that responded to the Bar Herald poll ranked the establishment of a Magistrates Court within the Territorial Court while 41% of those polled maintained that the Virgin Islands Supreme Court was a priority. 15% of those polled said that didn't know which option was a priority.

VI Attorneys Plan Community Outreach; Board of Governors Adopts Strategic Plan
   The newly elected Board of Governors of the Virgin Islands Bar Association held its Annual Bar Retreat January 11-12 at the Buccaneer Hotel on St. Croix. The Board adopted a comprehensive Strategic and Operation Plan that will guide the Territory's organization of attorneys and judges for the next three years.

Virgin Islands Bar Elects Officers; Advocates Establishing VI Supreme Court
   At their Annual Meeting at the Divi Carina Bay Resort on St. Croix, the Virgin Islands Bar Association elected its new officers. During presentation at the Caribbean Law Conference that was held in conjunction with the Bar Annual Meeting the subject of establishing a VI Supreme Court was discussed.
