Legal Assistants

     The Legal Assistants Focus Group will serve as liaison with the Virgin Islands Association of Legal Assistants. It will disseminate information to attorneys regarding the Legal Assistant profession; publicize issues of importance regarding legal assistants; and encourage attorneys to practice with qualified legal assistants or paralegals in order to lower costs and to improve the quality of service to clients. The Legal Assistant Focus Group will be specifically charged with investigating the paralegal training program offered through the University of the Virgin Islands with goal being to assist the program in obtaining American Bar Association accreditation. In addition, the Group will work with the VIBA Standing Committee on Legal Education and Admissions regarding training programs for legal assistants and paralegals.

Access to Justice
   The Access to Justice Committee will propose and implement improvements to provide better access to the justice system. The Committee will address issues effecting legal services programs and domestic violence prevention programs and suggest improvements for the courts, such as appointment of counsel.

Alternate Dispute Resolution
   The Alternative Dispute Resolution Committee shall address current issues of mediation, arbitration, and other alternative dispute resolution processes.

Awards and Memorials
   The Awards and Memorials Committee shall, with the consent of a majority of the Board of Governors, confer appropriate recognition and honors upon persons who have rendered outstanding service to the legal profession and the Virgin Islands Community.

Bar Journal
   Bar Journal Committee will be charged with the responsibility of producing, editing, and publishing our publications including The Virgin Islands Bar Herald, the official publication of the Virgin Islands Bar Association, the Virgin Islands Law Review and the Virgin Islands Lawyers Desk Book.

Bylaws
   Bylaws Committee shall study and make appropriate recommendations on all proposals to amend the Bylaws of the Association and present same for consideration by the Board of Governors, the General Membership, and the Territorial Court.

Judiciary
   The Judiciary Committee shall study and make recommendations to the Board of Governors concerning the betterment of judicial administration in the courts in the Virgin Islands; improvement of the working conditions and compensation of the members of the judiciary; and the improvement of judicial administration.

Law Clerks
   Law Clerks Council will consist of the all law clerks in the Territorial Court and the District Court of the Virgin Islands. The Council will work with the Virgin Islands Bar Journal Committee in and assembling an annual Virgin Islands Law Letter, a review of the outstanding cases in the courts of the Virgin Islands.

   Lawyer Referral Service (VILRS) will be as an affiliate of the Virgin Islands Bar Association and shall be a public service of the Bar referring the public to members of the Bar.

   The Lawyers Concerned for Lawyers Committee will assist members of the Virgin Islands Bar with chemical dependency, mental illness, and physical impairment issues.

   Legal Education and Admissions to the Bar Committee oversees the development and execution of the Virgin Islands Bar Association's CLE program to ensure the availability of a wide variety of on-island educational programs for members of the Bar.

   Legislation and Law Reform Committee shall oversee the government affairs programs of the Bar and prepare for legislative action such matters requiring legislation as may have received the approval of the Board of Governors.

Public Education and the Law
   The Public Education and the Law Committee is to promote the public understanding of the law and its role in society. The Committee shall conduct educational programs designed to educate and inform the Virgin Islands youth and adults about law and the justice system.
