Almeric Christian Memorial Scholarship Application

     An applicant for the Virgin Islands Bar Association Scholarship must be a college graduate who has been accepted to or is attending a law school accredited by the American Bar Association. The applicant must be a permanent resident of the United States Virgin Islands and plans to engage in the practice of law in the United States Virgin Islands within three (3) years of graduation from law school. Each successful applicant shall agree to a commitment of one (1) year of practice or work in the United States Virgin islands for each year an award is received.
     
     Please supply all information requested on this form, plus the following:
     
     1. A letter of acceptance to a law school approved by the American Bar Association or your most recent transcript from that institution if already enrolled in law school.
     
     2. Applicant must take the required number of credits as deemed necessary by the law school attending to be considered a full time student.
     
     3. Three letters of recommendation, one from a former college or law school professor and the rest from individuals that are not related to the applicant by blood or marriage. It is an applicant's responsibility to ensure that letters of recommendation are sent by the June 30 deadline.
     
     4. An essay on your career objectives and how the schooling you plan will prepare you to attain these goals. (Essay must be typewritten.) (A new essay must be submitted each year you apply.)
     
     5. An official copy of your undergraduate college transcript if entering your first year of law school. If presently attending law school, a copy of your latest official transcript.
     
     6. Applicants who are already attending law school must have a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.75. If your school does not grade on a 4.0 system, it is incumbent upon the applicant to clearly demonstrate that they fulfill the 2.75 G.P.A requirement.
     
     7. Applicants who have not started law school must have a cumulative undergraduate grade point average of at least 3.00. If your school does not grade on a 4.0 system, it is incumbent upon the applicant to clearly demonstrate that they fulfill the 3.00 G.P.A requirement.
     
     8. A copy of your Student Financial Aid form [FAF], or the equivalent thereof.
     
     The monies awarded to the successful candidate will be in the form of a grant, provided the successful applicant returns to practice law in the United States Virgin Islands. However, if the recipient does not return to practice law in the United States Virgin Islands within three (3) years of graduation from law school, the grant will become an interest bearing loan at the rate of nine percent (9%) per annum and repayable within three (3) years from the conversion to a loan.

     DEADLINE: Applications, and all information requested in items numbered 1 through 8 of "Instruction to the Applicant," must be postmarked no later than June 30 prior to the school term for which the scholarship is being applied. If an applicant did not receive their final grades or acceptance letters by the application deadline, the applicant can supplement their application, if necessary, and submit final grades and acceptance letter subsequent to the deadline. However, a letter of intent to supplement application with final grades or acceptance letter must be included with the application.
     
     Failure to submit all information requested will result in a rejection of the applicant's application.
